The La Crosse Area Music Teachers Association has an annual performance opportunity called Pianofest usually held in the beginning of the year. This is an educational opportunity for elementary-aged students to share, discuss, and perform a piano piece for their peers on a beautiful grand piano on a big stage. There is no judging – just a positive musical experience. Students will be performing in mixed-age groups with siblings placed together. Families should be in and out of the event in about an hour.
- Students up to and including 6th grade are invited to participate
- Students will perform one piece. Memorization is not required.
- Pieces should be less than 3 minutes in length
- Students should bring an original copy of their piece for the college mentors. No photocopies are allowed.
- Participants will be scheduled in groups of 4-6 students, depending on the number of participants. Siblings will be scheduled together.
- Each group will have an assigned “on-stage” time.
- The small group discussions will be led by a LAMTA teacher.
- Written feedback will be provided by the college mentors and given to the teachers after the event to pass on to their participating students.
- Students who bring a poster are encouraged to bring a display easel if they have one, but it’s not required.
- Posters should reflect a music topic such as: a composer, an instrument, historical timeline, etc…
- Treats will be provided in the lobby
- The schedule of assigned times will be sent to teachers one week before the event
- The total time that participants/families need to be at UWL on the day of the event should be about an hour.
- Every performance participant will receive a participation medal

This would be a good experience for students who interested in performing for a
small audience. This could also be a stepping stone for students interested in
piano competitions. Please let me know if your child is interested in
this performance opportunity.
